Bloodwork serves as a vital diagnostic tool, providing valuable health insights into patients.
Bloodwork is an important diagnostic tool that helps us determine any issues with your pet’s health. It gives us insights into the inner workings of your pet’s body, especially if health issues are manifesting as external symptoms. The thought of taking your pet’s blood can be anxiety-inducing but we do our best to ensure their experience is as comfortable and painless as possible.
If your pet has an upcoming appointment, blood tests help us examine the health of your pet’s internal organs and systems. Typically, we recommend furry friends have bloodwork done at least once a year during their wellness visits but we might request your pet have them done more frequently based on their age or if they have underlying health issues. If your pet has had sudden changes in their behaviour or health, bloodwork allows us to take a closer look at what might be the root cause of these issues.
First, we want to make sure your pet is in a comfortable position and is not feeling any discomfort. We might take blood from the veins in your pet’s neck or leg. After we’ve collected the blood sample, it gets sent to our in-house lab for testing. The wait time for results ranges but we try to have your pet’s results back to you as soon as possible. Some blood tests might require your pet to fast before their appointment so ensure you’re following our veterinary team’s instructions on how to prepare your pet.
Generally, we’ll do a Complete Blood Count to better understand your pet’s current health, regardless of if they’re healthy or ill. For example, this test can help us determine how many white and blood cells your pet has, which is an indication of how well their immune system is working. This test can also reveal their glucose, cholesterol and protein levels. If you have questions about your pet’s upcoming bloodwork, please contact us at 905-682-7857.
